Introduction
Due to the requirements of MGMT1001 course, students were placed in groups of five as a team of hikers attempting to climb to the top of Mount Everest with an additional student as an observer in an online simulation. The multimedia multi user simulation presents a series of problem solving and decision making challenges to student teams to allow students to learn how to build, participate in and lead teams more effectively and explore how different leadership approaches can improve the way they make decisions.
In reconsideration, different strategic methods were used in the two simulations. An approach with no prior preparation resulted in both low personal goals and team goals score, whereas an organised approach with the additional experience from the first experience and effective leadership produced a high team score. Changes in the structure of the groups, a defined goal, effective role implementation and an increase in mutual trust assisted in the higher team score attained. Changing leadership styles by implementing an efficient decision making process and conflict management process, allowed the communication problems in the first simulation to be overcome, eliminating occurrences of process loss and group think.
