Approximately one in five women in the United States experienced some form of sexual abuse as children. One-third to one-half of child sexual abuse victims are under the age of seven. While there are a number of situations that affect the lives of our women every day, one of the biggest problems is sexual abuse. In many cases this abuse is by someone that no one would ever thought would pose a danger to the family. Abuse can take many forms. It can be suffered at the hands of a loved one or a stranger, and it may be encountered in the home, the workplace, or outside. Physical and emotional abuse can have long lasting effects and leave their victims depressed, hurt, and isolated long after the original abuse is over. Abuse in all its forms thrives in an atmosphere of silence, where the abuser is never questioned and the victim often feels as if they are to blame for their own victimization. For this reason, it is crucial that individuals become aware of the types of abuse that exist, notice the signs of abuse, and refuse to tolerate it. Unfortunately, there are not enough groups dedicated to educating the public and providing resources and support for victims. These young children will more than likely grow and never tell anyone until they are older or when they do tell someone, in some cases, they are told they are not telling the truth. Mentoring women is necessary to this generation. Allowing them to walk around with harbored in feelings of pain, hurt and abuse are not healthy and there is a great need for more mentors to rise up and help our youth, especially our young women. Mentoring young women is a great necessity in today’s society. The lack of mentors and mentor programs in various communities is at a high and the amounts of troubled young women are on the rise.
