1. “I was born in the Delta in northern Mississippi in a small town named Sunflower. At the time of the Civil Rights Movement I was young. I was maybe fourteen years old at the time, not yet a man, but old enough were my family depended on me. It was like nothing that I had ever heard of. We did not have televisions or radios back then we only heard things from hear say. When what had happened in Alabama made it to Sunflower, MS the people were shocked. Some were ready for the change while others were scared of what would happen.”

3. To no surprise there were numerous challenges Civil Rights leaders faced in Mississippi while trying to organize the civil rights movement. The degree of racism in Mississippi is like it was in other southern states. The KKK or Ku Klux Klan were looking for any type of civil rights movement activities and activist. The NAACP was also having hard problems trying to get organized in Mississippi. One incident discovered while researching was the shooting and murdering of James Earl Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. These men were murdered while working for Freedom Summer. They were trying to help African Americans get registered to vote. After these men were murdered such acts as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 were passed. (SOURCE)
