Social Media

Lisa Hoover. How Social Networking Has Changed Society. Web: PCWorld Apr 7, 2009.
Lisa in this text explains her view on how social media took over society: now that an estimated 23% of American workers telecommute; many use online social networks as a way to stay connected to co-workers and colleagues. Social networking services expand the pool of people we have the opportunity to meet to near limitless possibilities. Lisa also exposes that we're no longer restricted to or rely on people in our neighborhood, church, or workplace to provide the interaction we desire. The main differences now are the real-time ways we communicate via instant messaging, Facebook walls, and Twitter replies. But in Ron Miller’s words, he states that:
It's possible that these social networking tools are just the beginning of something that they could lead to ways of finding and interacting with one another we never imagined but whatever happens, you can't dismiss these tools easily. They are taking us somewhere exciting, but we have to work out how we deal with the fading boundaries these tools have left in their wake and that means rewriting our social rules as we go along. (para#3)
Ron revel that social networking sites thrust people together in mind-boggling combinations of attributes. As a result, hierarchies, and enforced social structure are bound to emerge. It's what we humans do. I'm not surprised to see these communities establishing new social rules; I'm only surprised it took so long.

Nick Pernisco. Social Media Impact and Implications on Society SJMLE Editor: 2010. Nick in this text discusses in the past five years, social media websites have become ubiquitous, giving young people a new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world. This new form of communication depends on user created content, not mass produced messages coming from large media companies. But as with other media before it, social media's rise to prominence has experienced some very serious growing pains. Nick goes on and states that: Companies like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have struggled to balance an inviting interactive environment with the ultimate pursuit of profits. The borders of countries and states have dissolved to the credit of the Internet and social media. Through Facebook and Twitter, among others, companies are able to fabricate and build virtual personalities. (1) Thus, I say thanks to these sites, our expectations of the web, as well as society, have changed. Through history as the communication platforms evolved the method of communicating also had to adapt.

Alyssa B. Social Media Harassment; Understand Media 2010
Alyssa demonstrates as computer technology increases, social media becomes more and more of a widely used source of communication. It has become so popular that it is completely changing the way people view and respond to society, and opening up new ways for people to interact with each other. She explains both good and bad thing about social media. Two advantages being that it has given people the convenience of being able to connect with others all over the world without having to step a foot out of their homes and also the rare cases that crimes are sometimes solved through the help of a social media site. Now she explains the problems by created these sites are much more prevalent than advantages because it gives malicious people the ability to create more danger among the millions of internet users. Information that is posted on the internet by people who believe it to only to be viewable among their friends often find that they have unintentionally shared personal facts with hundreds of people, some whom plan to use it against them. In her words she states:
People are able to get through loopholes in the social media that allow them to stalk others, sell illegal
