Summary of the module:
This module establishes a parallel with music theory and aural skills. The first part of the module explores the theory aspects of music. It introduces the analysis of reference repertory along with the study of the needed basics in music theory to establish the link to music composition. Students will explore the basics of musical structure in short exercises, involving elements such as form, melodies and themes, with notions of counterpoint and voice leading, musical textures, and popular harmony. Notions of instrumentation will also be explored. The second part of the module is planned on the application of learnt theory onto practical projects. The work with MIDI arrangement aims to enable students to present a demo song of their composition via the usage of software such as musical notation and audio/MIDI sequencers.
