Why was Mazzini such a significant figure in the movement for Italian Unification?
Giuseppe Mazzini was such a significant figure in the movement for Italian unification as he gave the people of Italy the sense of hope they needed in order to unite together and become a united Italy. He believed that Italy should be independent form any foreign powers and therefore further their own culture and economic development. He also believed that everyone should have and equal opportunity for education and gender equality within Italy. His use of politics, leadership, and the clarification of unification brought people to have faith in him and to be influenced to unite Italy.
Mazzini’s political ideas were made very clear when he created the first political party in Italy; this took place in 1832 and was called ‘Young Italy’. The party had progressive ideas which lead people to know what a united Italy should be like, this attracted many people as it presented them with the hope of freedom of speech and state. Mazzini converted many people to the cause, which help make a great supporter rate which in turn helped them to be well known and increase the chances of them being successful in uniting Italy. However while people supported his radical ways others were put off due to it, for example France didn’t want to support Mazzini’s ideas as he already told them before to stand out of Italian affairs.
