Mats Ek is a world renowned choreographer, known for his works adapting classic ballets into ground breaking, game changing modern works of art. Mats Ek was born in Malmo Sweden in 1945, son of the choreographer Brigit Cullberg and Ander Ek, a famous Swedish actor. The young Mats Ek did not particularly want to be a dancer, and he spent some years producing plays. Soon later Mats Ek trained in classical dance with Lillian Katrina and later with Donya Feuer in 1962. After discovering his newfound love for dance Mats Ek joined the Cullberg ballet in 1973. In 1982 Mats Ek created his greatest work, the reinterpretation of the classical ballet Giselle was seen as ground breaking and inspirational creating a new…show more content… Also many social groups were fighting for there own freedom during this time including the liberation of women and this was shown in Giselle by having the women roll Huge eggs around the stage and the men free to dance. The 1960’s and the 1970’s also brought on a sexual revolution witch encouraged open thinkiong toward the topic of sex, matts ek put this into his Giselle by choreographing sexual moves into the dancing, Matts Ek also used suggestive backdrops his Backdrop in Giselle was suggesting breasts. All these changes through time inspired Ek to relate to what the people were feeling and thinking at that time.
In conclusion Matts Ek’s experiences through life have contributed to how he creates amazing works of art such as Giselle since choreographing Giselle Matts Ek has become the artistic director of the Cullberg ballet, and has made many more inspiring works of art as well as more interpretations of classics such as swan lake and Carmen. Matts Ek has choreographed fore the Hamburg ballet, the Nederland’s Dan theatre, Paris opera and les Grands ballet canadien de Montréal, Matts ek continues to create amazing works of art today, through his life experiences he has ascended himself to one of the greatest choreographers of modern dance.
