Forensic Investigation- Math B
By Sandy Storey ,G11B
Introduction
the approximation of stature is a big forensic anthropological apprehension used to classify unidentified and/or mutilated humanoid remains via long bones. Forensic scientists use clues to create the identity of a person and by analysing their skeletal remains many different things can be found for example there is a link between the length of some bones and the height of an individual and scientists can use the remains of a person to create an identity of their previous being usually by using their longer bones such as Femur, Tibia and Humorous. This connection between bone length and height is called regression; it enables scientists to infer height from just a few bones.
Research
No universally applicable formula for finding height from bone length can be derived as the relationship between height and long bone differs according to race, age and sex. To derive the height of an individual from their bones measure the length of the acquired bone and using the below table to determine race and sex then use the correct formula to determine the estimated height.
Here is a table depicting all of the formulae to determine the approximate height from bone length taking into account racial identity.
