Marijuana is a mood stimulating drug that has multiple nicknames, such as green, pot, Mary Jane and many others. It is the most illegal drug used by teenagers and adults in the United States. Marijuana is by far the number one used illegal drug overall. It has been legalized in many states now for medical use only. Its legalization in the United Stated is a topic that has become a very controversial issue. Marijuana is easily abused, is very addictive and is harmful to the health of those who use it. Therefore this drug should stay illegal throughout the United States if not used for medical use.
Marijuana abuse affects all of us in our daily lives. It ruins families and destroys relationships. Teens especially are more likely to abuse the drug due to great peer pressure, everyday stress, and depression. Marijuana is usually smoked as a cigarette (joint), in bongs, or in pipes. It can also be baked in brownies or cookies. Also is smoked in blunts, which are cigars that have been emptied of tobacco and refilled with a mixture of marijuana and tobacco. This mode of delivery combines marijuana's active ingredients with nicotine and other harmful chemicals. Marijuana can also be mixed in food or brewed as a tea. Marijuana addiction is simply an uncontrollable urge to possess and use the drug. Those with marijuana addiction are not able to stop using the drug even if they wish. Often a person with marijuana addiction will make continuous excuses about why now is not a good time to stop using the drug. An addicted person may think they need more to get high than they once did because the effect is diminished over time; they continually chase that “original” high. Negative consequences are piling up due to marijuana use, they try to quit, but find themselves craving a joint – they rarely stay stop using the drug for more than a few months at a time.
