Biographical Information:

1901 Born on December 16 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
1923 earned her Bachelor’s degree from Barnard College in Psychology
1924 earned her Master’s from Columbia University and studied with Professor Franz Boas and Dr. Ruth Benedict
1925 she left to Samoa where she did her first field work and focused on adolescent girls and their passing through to adulthood.
1926 she joined the American Museum of natural history in New York City, as assistant curator
1928 married her second husband, Reo Fortune also an anthologists
1929 earned her Ph. D from Columbia University
1936 married her third husband, Gregory Bateson
1939 had her only daughter Mary Catherine Bateson, which later became also an anthropologist
1978 died of pancreatic cancer in New York at age 76

1935 Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies became a major cornerstone for the feminist movement because it claimed that females are dominant in the Tchambuli
1945 Balinese Character: A Photographic Analysis contained 759 pictures of her findings in Bali and focused on Balinese culture and character formation
