MARCEL DUCHAMP

Marcel Duchamp was born on the 8th of July 1887, in France. He was first recognized as an artist in 11 when he submitted a panting titles “Nude Descending a Staircase, No. ” in New York. Duchamp was known for being a painter but also he was known for being a poet, experimenter in films and a chess player. In 111, when he was influenced by cubism, he painted the picture “ The Chess Players” and started his first studies of “Nude Descending a Staircase No ”. Also he created “The Coffee Mill”. In this piece there was many problems of Dadaism and surrealism.

In 11 he finished on of his main, and most known for works “Nude Descending a Staircase NO ”. The first showing of this piece created a fuss. Newspapers discovered that there was no trace of a nude or even a real figure in it. Which then came to symbolize some sort of movement of modern art towards humor and absurdity.

In 117 Duchamp invented the “ready-made”. (A found object, which he declared, was an artwork) This extraordinary event was very influential of art in the 0th centaury. It opened the way for other artist for whom the object was a source and significant element in their works.

One of his ready-made objects, “Bicycle Wheel”, 11, (diameter 64.8cm and mounted on a stool which is 60.cm high) became a real talking point. The main problem with Duchamp’s ready-made was that people didn’t classify it as art. They would say all it is, is an ordinary every day object put in a gallery. Also a point they would put forward that he didn’t create it, all he did was present it. This led to a discussion of what art is really? Something you as a artist create with your own hands or some idea you think up and present it to someone else to make it.
