Manifest Destiny Final Draft One of the largest and most wealthy countries in the world is the United States of America, it has gone through many changes in its long history. From winning its independence from Great Britain to the present day. America has changed dramatically and continues to change. Within all these characteristics a term first coined in called ‘Manifest Destiny’, also referred to as the west ward expansion, was the belief that America was destined by god with the mission of expanding across the continent. The west ward expansion was the central theme of the American history because without the expansion the country wouldn’t be where it is today. In the earlier period democracy was newly introduced, as a result people introduced it to the new land. Unfortunately, to accomplish the mission, the homes of the Native Americans were dominated by the settlers for the sake of the country and its' future. To create a superior nation, the Native Americans had to be stripped down from their cultures. Sullivan supported the decision by declaring ' America is destined to be a great nation, and that it needs to be modernized to have a great future for the humankind'.( manifest destiny by john o'Sullivan 1839).The motive behind this declaration was to generate a new country starting with a fresh sheet in keeping everybody equal, including the Native Americans. To start an improved country, things had to change for everyone, by building new houses, factories and railroads, which took a massive part away from the Natives territory. A particular painting that supported the movement of the settlers was the 'American progress', it illustrates many images of the development of the country and it shows character and uniqueness. The work of the art reveals an angel in the middle floating toward the unexplained dark side of the image. The angel clarifies that it was sent from god to support the settlers movement. An additional clue that was revealed was the ray of sunlight and the dark region. The sunlight was shining on the cities, boats and churches that represent America today.
