Team Competence Assessment

Assessing and developing team member competencies can be a challenging task. However, it is considered to be one of the most important tasks in the achievement of coordination and collaboration within a team. There are six areas of competence to assess: Project management, Networking, Use of Technology, Self-Management, Spanning Boundaries, and Interpersonal Awareness. In assessing the team's areas of competence, each member's individual skills and related experience is reviewed in order to establish a development plan not only for individual team members, but for the team as a whole.

Project Management involves the ability to plan and organize team work and to correspond to team schedules. In addition, it includes the development of different methods to report progress and problems, to monitor and control, as well as to take actions to get back on track. This area facilitates collaboration and coordination with autonomy, and it also enhances performance on virtual teams. The second area of competence -Networking- takes into consideration how effective members can be on knowing the organizational landscape, and navigating inside and out the organization. The use of Technology is another important area of competence that states that team member must be able to use technology in order to properly communicate, coordinate, and collaborate. Proper use of technology involves knowing the etiquette of technology and knowing how to plan and conduct remote team meetings.

Self- management, on the other hand, has different aspects and may vary depending on the kind of team a member may be working on. There are four important skills that team members may have or may develop.
