MADD Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a nonprofit organization in the United States that seeks to stop drunk driving, support those affected by drunk driving, prevent underage drinking, and overall push for stricter alcohol policy. The Irving, Texas–based organization was founded in 1980 in California by Candice Lightner after her 13-year-old daughter Cari was killed by a drunk driver. On May 3, 1980 Lightner’s 13-year-old daughter, Cari, was killed by a drunken hit-and-run driver at Sunset and New York Avenues in Fair Oaks, California. The 46-year-old driver, who had recently been arrested for another DUI hit-and-run, left her body at the scene. MADD's original goal There were a few problems while trying to get them started. There were statements and rumors started about where the funds were going and what they were used for which aroused suspicion and put up a barrier for trust. There were also taxes added on beer purchases which some felt was not fair to the beer drinker who only drinks on the weekends. Their focus shifted from the drunk driver to people who drink alcohol which caused society to be defiant towards their policies. The effects of their policies intelled more work for Human services workers for the drunk driver and the families that were affected by the drunk drivers. Long after a crash, survivors still feel the impact. MADD Victim Services and policies provide emotional support and assistance with medical and legal struggles that follow a drunken driving crash. Providing emotional support; Providing advocacy in the criminal and civil justice systems; Accompanying victims/survivors to court; Assisting in preparing a victim impact statement; Referring victims/survivors to appropriate resources for additional help; Offering support groups in many areas; Connecting victims/survivors who share similar experiences and Providing supportive materials on victimization topics. As mentioned above, MADD's original goal was an enormously important one -- to reduce drunk driving and the deaths and injuries that it causes. However, from what I can see and as its founder observed the group has gotten off
hey gather on the beach. Piggy, who was not on the mountain the night before, is baffled by the other boys’ claims to have seen the monster. Jack seizes the conch shell and blows into it clumsily, calling for an assembly. Jack tells the others that there is definitely a beast on the mountain and goes on to claim that Ralph is a coward who should be removed from his leadership role. The other boys, however, refuse to vote Ralph out of power. Enraged, Jack storms away from the group, saying that he…
increases the chances of getting into a drunk driving accident. BAC level is the amount of alcohol is in a person’s body measured by the weight of the alcohol in a certain volume of blood (Fell and Voas, 2006). According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), on an average of 90 seconds, a person is involved in a drunk driving accident. When people drink alcohol, it alters the brain’s communication paths and impairs people’s judgment; increasing the likelihood of a crash (WHO, 2007). All injuries and…
Causes of Car Accidents One late night the dark blue Mustang was traveling south on highway 92 with the music turned up, everyone in the car was singing, laughing, and having a great time. The phone rings, the driver looks down at the phone, BOOM, the car swerves and hits a tree. The driver is instantly dead and the passengers are severely injured. Accidents like this are happening every day. Car accidents are a serious problem in the United States. Distracted driving, speeding, and drunk driving…
Alcohol Advertising Exposure to alcohol advertising is an everyday occurrence. Alcohol advertising is persuasive not only to adults but to those who are too young to buy alcohol legally. Although parents and peers have a large impact on youth decisions to drink, marketing also has a significant impact by influencing the attitudes of parents and peers and helping to create an environment that promotes underage drinking. Alcohol companies focus billions of dollars on advertising their products…
Placing the Blame When I was 22 years old I was stationed in the military at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. I was invited to a Christmas party off the base and decided to go. I had a little too much to drink at the party, and against my better judgment, I hopped into my Jeep, started it up and proceeded to drive to base. I went through the gate security without incident, and I didn’t really think too much of it. I continued down the road, came around a bend in the road, and there was a roadblock with military…
along with pressure from an organization known as MADD, or Mothers against Drunk Driving, pushed the United States Government to pass the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. Today it has become apparent that the legal minimum drinking age and the prevention of drunk driving are two separate issues. People tend to look at alcohol as the only dangerous factor in drunk driving incidents, however they forget that driving is a dangerous task by itself. MADD (?) states that drunk driving fatalities have been…
by an estimated 16 percent and keeping young people safer from many risk.” (MADD) Multiple of activities have ages of initiation, you have to be six-teen to drive, eight-teen to vote, and thirty-five to become a presidential candidate. Based on research which shows that young people react differently to alcohol. Teens are more likely to get drunk twice as fast as adults, but have more trouble knowing when to stop. and other outside influences it is getting harder for kids to resist the lure of alcohol and say no. More than 40% of teenage deaths occur in motor vehicle accidents 38.9 % were alcohol related crashes. (MADD, 2003). Just last year alone 1877 teenagers died as a result of drunk driving (MADD, 2003). These are young people who could have possibly grown up to be the next Michel Jordan or John F. Kennedy. These kids' lives were cut short because of alcohol. Did you know that it is believed that…
the wheel of a car, that person endangers not only themselves, but everyone else on the road as well. One poor choice could very well impact the driver, the victims, all their loved ones, and possibly even witnesses to the accident. According to MADD, two out of every three people will be involved in a drunk driving accident in their lifetime. In 2013, 290,000 of those people were injured. 10,076 of them were killed. Unfortunately, pledging to never drink and drive does not necessarily make…
