Guilt Guilt, it can drive anyone mad if they allow it to, in this case Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had multiple reasons to feel guilty. In the beginning of this play Macbeth was told by these witches that he would soon become king of Scotland, and that he had to act at once. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth desired this title so badly, willing to do anything to obtain it. They did not realize it would take such control of their lives. One of the major themes or central idea displayed in The Tragedy of Macbeth is ambition. In this play a lot of times ambition leads to guilt. At the time Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were consumed with greed they did not realize what their actions would eventually lead up to. Macbeth the current Thane of Cawdor had a strong relationship with the current king Duncan. Lady Macbeth draws up this plan to kill the king in his sleep so her husband Macbeth would be entitled the king of Scotland. They followed through with the plan and Macbeth became king. Lady Macbeth had all she wanted but yet still was not happy; she soon realized that Macbeth would do whatever it takes to cover up the murder even if it involved committing other acts of murder. Lady Macbeth soon felt guilty about the actions that were taken place, it drove her crazy. She began sleepwalking, talking mad and randomly shed tears. No one understood, these actions soon lead to the death of Lady Macbeth. The guilt was too much for her to handle and we are left to believe she committed suicide. Macbeth did as well have guilt although it was handled differently than Lady Macbeth, it was not as clear and obvious that he had guilt but nonetheless it was still there. An example of Macbeth having a guilty conscience is when they gather for a conference he saw the ghost of this good friend
