The old Man and the Sea Quote Project Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. Winston Churchill This quote is explaining that there is more to success and if one does not succeed it is not the end. It takes courage or passion to continue on even though one has failed.
In The old Man and the Sea this shown by the old man. Santiago has not caught fish for 84 days but he doesn’t give up. Santiago believes that his time will come so he is patient. On the 84th day he catches many fish and begins his long fight with the marlin.

This quote is trying to say that failure is not an option. A person does not always become successful on the first try and a person must keep on trying to stride for success. This can be applied to Santiago in the book. Santiago has learned that failure is need for success. Santiago has failed to catch a fish for months but he knows success his near he does not stop until he successful.

Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hardwork, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believes.

Gail Devers is expressing that to accomplish your dreams requires mental strength, dedication, determination, and many other strengths. Gail is also trying to say anything is possible if you try hard enough and believe hard enough in yourself.
Santiago in The old Man and the Sea shows many of these characteristics. Santiago is determined to catch the marlin. Santiago stays out in the sea risks his own life to catch the marlin even though he started to get weak as the hours turned into days he tried to give all he had left in him to bring the fish in.

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.
-Booker T Washington Booker is explaining that success is not measured by where they are in life but that success is measured by the struggle that person gave to do accomplish something. This can be compared to santiago. Santiago in his prime struglled in an arm wrestle with the strongest man in his area. Santiago did not give up easily in his struggle. Santiago arm wrestled the man for a full day and in the end overcame his obstacle and won the match to become known as “El campeon.”

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind it doesn’t matter. – Mark Twain What Mark Twain is saying in this quote is that age does not matter. Age can hold a person back or not bother a person if the person thinks beyond it. Santiago is an old man. Santiago is not as strong as he used to be. This is a weakness when he is fighting against the marlin. Santiago is faced with age he becomes weaker and weaker but he thinks about his time when he arm wrestled for a day he uses to overcome his age and weakness to fight against the fish. He uses his mind over matter to overcome his struggle.

There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heart break, every loss contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.

This quote explains that defat is necessary for success to happen. If a person fails it is not the end. There is a seed or a new idea for success to take place.
This is related to the book because in the end the old man’s fish is eaten by groups of sharks. In the end he is faced with defeat and success. The old man lost the fish but his failure made him look like a legend since the fish is the biggest any fisherman in his area has ever seen. His failure is seen as success to other people.
