Overview of Common Hour

Within each Chicago Quarter class, one hour of class each week (10 hours total) is dedicated to Common Hour, a co-curricular program designed to address common issues of transition for First-Year Students.

Common hour is comprised of information sessions, discussions, activities and workshops designed to help students make a successful academic and developmental transition into DePaul University. The Common Hour curriculum is developed by the Office of Academic Enhancement in partnership with University partners. The curriculum is very intentionally designed to support students through issues of transition revolving around the following themes: Academic Success Skills, Understanding Diversity and Culture, Sense of Belonging and Community, Educational/Career Planning, Financial Planning, Health & Wellness, Technology, and Socially Responsible Leadership.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This class will be constructed as a community of learners. Each participant will play a role as educator and learner. As the instructor, I will be a co-learner and facilitator. As a facilitator, it is my role to provide content, context and direction for the course, while at the same time providing opportunities for you to tap into and demonstrate your own self-knowledge.

In order to create an open and supportive learning environment it is expected that all members of the class will be respectful of others. Thus, all members of the class will provide input and develop additional expectations pertaining to class environment.

On Tuesdays, I will send out informational e-mails and reminders regarding special events or assignments. Please make sure you alert me if you are unable to receive these e-mails.

Texts and Readings
Common Hour Materials will be posted on your Chicago Quarter Course Blackboard Site. Assignments and readings will be e-mailed to you, but are also posted on Blackboard.
