Overview of Common Hour

Within each Chicago Quarter class, one hour of class each week (10 hours total) is dedicated to Common Hour, a co-curricular program designed to address common issues of transition for First-Year Students.

Common hour is comprised of information sessions, discussions, activities and workshops designed to help students make a successful academic and developmental transition into DePaul University. The Common Hour curriculum is developed by the Office of Academic Enhancement in partnership with University partners. The curriculum is very intentionally designed to support students through issues of transition revolving around the following themes: Academic Success Skills, Understanding Diversity and Culture, Sense of Belonging and Community, Educational/Career Planning, Financial Planning, Health & Wellness, Technology, and Socially Responsible Leadership.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This class will be constructed as a community of learners. Each participant will play a role as educator and learner. As the instructor, I will be a co-learner and facilitator. As a facilitator, it is my role to provide content, context and direction for the course, while at the same time providing opportunities for you to tap into and demonstrate your own self-knowledge.

In order to create an open and supportive learning environment it is expected that all members of the class will be respectful of others. Thus, all members of the class will provide input and develop additional expectations pertaining to class environment.

On Tuesdays, I will send out informational e-mails and reminders regarding special events or assignments. Please make sure you alert me if you are unable to receive these e-mails.

Texts and Readings
Common Hour Materials will be posted on your Chicago Quarter Course Blackboard Site. Assignments and readings will be e-mailed to you, but are also posted on Blackboard.
Academic Integrity
DePaul University is a learning community that fosters the pursuit of knowledge and the transmission of ideas within a context that emphasizes a sense of responsibility for oneself, for others and for society at large. Violations of academic integrity, in any of their forms, are, therefore, detrimental to the values of DePaul, to the students' own development as responsible members of society, and to the pursuit of knowledge and the transmission of ideas. Violations include but are not limited to the following categories: cheating; plagiarism; fabrication; falsification or sabotage of research data; destruction or misuse of the university's academic resources; alteration or falsification of academic records; and academic misconduct. Conduct that is punishable under the Academic Integrity Policy could result in additional disciplinary actions by other university officials and possible civil or criminal prosecution. Please refer to your Student Handbook or visit Academic Integrity at DePaul University (http://academicintegrity.depaul.edu) for further details.
Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

Students who feel they may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact the course instructor privately to discuss their specific needs. All discussions will remain confidential. To ensure that you receive the most appropriate accommodation based on your needs, contact the instructor as early as possible in the quarter (preferably within the first week of class), and make sure that you have contacted the:
PLuS Program (for LD, AD/HD) at 773-325-8656 in Lincoln Park Student Center, Suite 370
The Office for Students with Disabilities (for all other disabilities) at 773-325-7290 Student Center 370
