Long Term Detention In the state of Ohio there are several juvenile detention centers that house juveniles that have committed a crime. The centers receive juveniles based on a referral from a law enforcement agency or the juvenile court system. Juveniles are admitted to the centers for crimes that range from aggravated robbery to assault. All of the centers have long term services and house a various number of juveniles. Most of the centers are government owned and house both girls and boys. There are some privately owned centers and one that houses males only. Every one of the centers offer housing, food, education, and have programs that specifically relate to the reason the juvenile is incarcerated. According to the Children’s Defense Fund in an article, Rethinking Juvenile Detention in Ohio, it was an important time for Ohio in 2010 because big changes were being made. They stated, “The settlement of a federal class action lawsuit, S.H. v. Stickrath in 2008, is serving as a catalyst for change, including improvement in condition of state correctional facilities for those youth who are placed there. An increase in state and private funding has been generated to increase dollars to counties for community based alternatives in accordance with national best practices. Along with the settlement, a standardized risk assessment measure was developed for statewide use to more accurately match youth with the rehabilitation that is best suited based on their risk levels.” Due to the lawsuit and changes that have been made, especially in the area of funding, we can expect to see more privately owned facilities in Ohio that will cater to the majority of juveniles. Each county that has a government owned juvenile detention center has their own website which varies in description. The Butler County Juvenile Detention Center states on their website, “The facility utilizes the Hamilton City School District to provide educational programming ot residents being housed in the facility. Further, the facility relies on community volunteers and community agencies to provide programming for the residents.” The Butler County Juvenile Detention Center offers classes provided by the community ranging from life skills to religious services. The Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center states on their website, “The Hamilton County Juvenile Court Youth Center, rebuilt in 1995, located at 2020 Auburn Avenue, is a 164,500 square foot, multi-story, eight unit, sixteen pod, 160 secure bed, county detention facility that contains two Court rooms, the Court's Psychological/Psychiatric clinic, intake complaint processing center, and a counseling center referred to as the Intervention Unit.” The Hamilton County Detention Center is a good example of a facility that caters to a specific type of delinquent youth because it does have the “Court’s Psychological/Psychiatric clinic.” The facilities psychology department states on their website, “All residents of the Juvenile Court Youth Center are assessed upon admission to determine whether they are high risk for suicidal ideation. The youth are given a high-risk assessment by the Clinic staff to re-evaluate whether that high-risk classification is appropriate. The clinic staff is also required to evaluate Youth Center residents due to psychotic behavior, suicidal attempts and threats, unprovoked assaults, suicidal ideation, behavioral or emotional changes, status downgrade and requests for counseling. If a youth was psychotic, or made a suicidal attempt or threat, clinic staff follows up on that youth. Follow-up, collateral visits are crucial in providing beneficial mental health services to the youth.”
