Chapter 1, Video 1: What is Logic? According to professor Gregory, logic is defined as the study of arguments and to distinguish them from unsuccessful and successful. Its also the methods for applying the criteria. The arguments mentioned are a set of statements in which the premises are supposed to support or give reasons for the remaining statement,or conclusion. There are different types of arguments. Logic is also the study of consistency equivalence and logical truth. Pursuasion is not apart of logic. In arguments such as successful arguments, if the premise is true, then the conclusion is guaranteed or likely to be true. When studying logic, you may become a better thinker, knower, and writer. It helps you to understand and look at things better.
Chapter 1, Video 2: Deductive Criteria for Evaluating Arguments There are different types of criteria for successful arguments. Two of which are deductive and inductive. Some deductive statements can have true premises and false conclusions. They can also have false premises and true conclusions. A true statement is not always guaranteed. An argument is deductive if and only if it is not possible for all premises to be true and the conclusion is false. A sound argument is deductively valid and has true premises. They also must have a true conclusion because the premises are true and valid. An argument can be valid, but not sound when the premises are false.
