William Golding’s Lord of The Flies helps us understand the challenges we face over the world from the 1950’s all the way to today. This a novel about a group of boys who get stranded on an island, using charters and actions he relates to the challenges going on in the world. William Golding reflects on some of the issues going on in the 50’s, like WWII, and shows us that there are ways to deal with them and that they can be used today on our challenges. The themes golding uses to help us understand the challenges we face in the world are, Leadership, Order and Moral consequence.

In Lord Of The Flies the boys have a choice of either Democracy or Totalitarianism. This reflects on one of the challenges we face today and back in the 1950’s, where the leaders of the world had to chose what type of government they wanted to run. In the novel the quote “the world, that understandable and lawful world was slipping away” uses personification to show us that we need democracy in our life, reflecting to Golding’s time. Later on in the novel Golding uses short sentences and rhetorical questions, when Piggy says : “What are we? Humans? Or Animals? Or Savages?” This makes us fearful of what the children may become without the democratic system and are made to agree with democracy. Towards the end of chapter 5 democracy is questioned when Ralph and Jack are fitting ; “The rules!” shouted ralph “your breaking the rules!” “Who cares?!”. Golding shows us that there are 2 types of Government styles for 2 types of people, Jack and Ralph. In this Quote Ralph is trying to reason with Jack and help him, showing democracy, whereas Jack as Jack is showing that he is big and strong by yelling and breaking the rules, brining out the Totalitarianism side of himself. The actions and emotions expressed here can be related back to some of the challenges faced in the world, dealing with government, today and back in two 1950’s.

There are many choices in this world that can be considered moral or immoral decisions. Lord of The Flies shows us that these decisions can lead to consequences that we can not always control and we just have to find a way to deal with them. This reflects decisions made back in the 1950’s and today. In the novel Ralph shouts at Jack “Your a beast and a swine and a bloody bloody thief,” Golding’s use of metaphoric, Derogatory language and the repetition of the word bloody is used to show Ralph's anger in the immoral decisions that Jack has been making. Later on in the novel when Piggy and Jack are fighting, Piggy yells “Which is better — To have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill? Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?” Golding has used juxtaposition of rhetorical questions to highlight the immoral choices they have made. In this case the choice of rules and agreeing to hunt and kill, law and rescue and hunting and breaking is a reflection oh how the characters gave a choice and whether they make a moral and immoral decisions. This reflects the world leaders during the 1950’s when the novel was written when country leaders were having to make moral and immoral decisions such as the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. During chapter 11 Jack screams “See? See? Thats what you’ll get! I mean that! There isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch s gone—” Golding’s use of the symbolism of the conch combined with jack’s immoral decisions to drop the rock on Piggy reflects on the decisions made by world leaders in the 1950’s. Through these actions and statements made by the characters in Lord Of The Flies, you can see that there are many choices in this world considered as moral or immoral decisions.

Order and savagery is a big part of this world, without rules and regulations
