Fisher Cross 12-13-12 7th Period Abraham Lincoln Eight Speeches: Final Project;Part One America remains one country today because of Abraham Lincoln's leadership and excellence. In the House Divided Speech he said, “ I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.” By saying this he was telling the country that its government would cease to exist if there was not a resolution, one way or another, and that the government could not continue to be divided in two along with the country. There needed to be some kind of resolution to unite the country and bring them together as one, as we have since became and remain to be today. Lincoln then in the Cooper Union Address says, “Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.” By saying this he is telling the Republicans to keep doing their duty to this country, and have faith that in doing that, they will have one strong country at the end of the day. He reaffirms his leadership and grace in his Farewell Address, “To you dear friends I owe all that I have, all that I am.” He shows in that statement that he is very gracious and thankful for all that he has received to get him to where he was, which are both great leadership qualities. in the First Inaugural Address, he said in regard to the Union and Confederates, “We are not enemies, but friends.” Which is saying that the two sides disagree, but irreparable damage has not been done to the country and they will reunite as old friends do to repair this great nation. This supports my opening statement about his value because he tells them that they will fix this, for they are fellow countrymen and friends not enemies. Special Session Message: “This is the Patriotic instinct of plain people.” He said that referring to the North saying that they understand that destroying the government, created by Washington, progresses them no farther, and hinders their chances of becoming united with the south under a Republican

Mark E. Neely Jr., Lincoln scholar and Pulitzer Prize winning historian, is the author of The Last Best Hope…
