This week at my field site was a very interesting week because the after school programs started and I got to meet the children and their families that we sever. I was also able to learn how to enroll new children into the program. Big Brother Big Sisters of Lorain County offers mentoring to all children facing adversity and needs someone to help them stay on the right track and act as a role model, friend, and guide. The client population severed by the agency is children of all rascals/economical background ages 6 to 14 in need of a mentoring relationship and indirectly the immediate family members of these children. This agency serves a diverse community and annually updates a plan to address the need for culturally specific and relevant services for ethnic minorities, deaf or hard of hearing individuals and other requiring cultural competency. This is executed as part of the Big Brother Big Sister’s Quality Improvement (QI) plan on at least an annual basis. Big Brother Big Sisters of Lorain County does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, disability, color, religion, sex, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status or national origin. Such discrimination is prohibited in all matters of recruitment, selection, hiring, promotion, evaluation, retention, discharge, compensation, terms, conditions, and privileges of employment or volunteer service. The only exceptions to not accepting a child into the program is if they do not wish to join or if they have a very mental health illness like autism, which prohibits them from participating in the interview process. Although we as an agency welcomes all children between 6-14 years of age it seems like the children were are working with are children of single parent house holds’, low income housing, children living with grandparents and/ or children facing a lot of adversity and barriers.
