Legalizing Marijuana

In 2014, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for medical and recreational use. Several studies have shown that there are benefits from legalizing marijuana. Those benefits include; creating jobs, marijuana is less damaging than alcohol, and most importantly every person has free will or choice to use any substance legal or not.
According to Ike Brannon’s Legalizing Marijuana; Money over Minds, if Congress were to legalize marijuana, it would create a new revenue stream, which would lower tax rates and reduce the deficit. The tobacco industry creates 660,000 jobs, and if Marijuana were legalized, then a cannabis industry would also create thousands of jobs. There would new jobs from growing the product, cutting, processing, distribution, and sales of marijuana. With a combined total of roughly $260 billion, which is both alcohol and tobacco, with alcohol bringing in, $188 billion. The tobacco industry brought $71 billion in cigarettes, with a total of $75 billion. Marijuana not only creates jobs, but is a lot less damaging that alcohol and tobacco use.
In January 2014 President Barrack Obama stated that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol in terms of the impact on the individual consumer. There have been multiple reports of dying from an alcoholic overdose; while there have been no reports of people overdosing from marijuana. Now, while one drink is considered to be healthy for an individual; there are also adverse effects from chronic drinking, such as liver disease or fibrosis.
