Throughout my life, I have always been described as motivated. I involve myself in many activities simultaneously and constantly stoke the fire inside, driving me to success in most of my ventures. Due to my short attention span, I realize that I must complete projects and challenges as quickly as possible; my focus wanes after the initial thrill of initiation so I plan accordingly. This hard-charging characteristic of me dictates my attempted goals, and ultimately is responsible for my pursuing a college education. Although commonplace in the United States, a college degree is much rarer and significantly more lucrative in my native country of Colombia. As I eventually plan to return to my homeland and become a successful businessman running my father’s ventures, I am employing all resources at my disposal to enhance my secondary education (including identifying my primary learning styles). To successfully complete the courses of study that will yield my ultimate goal of a college degree, I must identify and utilize the methods which facilitate my absorption of the material best. Thanks to this class, I now have four methods to ascertain which method (visual, auditory and tactile) will enable me to process the most information and maximize my resulting learning. J. White’s Learning style inventory test was particularly helpful by providing a 24 question multiple choice assessment which identified me as being a more tactile learner, with visual coming in a close second. I agree with this prognosis wholeheartedly, as I do enjoy working with my hands (I just finished a complete engine swap on my 1999 Mitsubishi) and sometimes need to practice an action several times before successfully mastering it. Also, my visual diagnosis was correct as well (in my opinion). I have always had a fascination with maps and used them extensively as I lived and traveled throughout South America before I completed high school in the United States. My ex-wife is sure to agree with my low ranking of my auditory learning skills, as she always complained that I didn’t listen to her after a few minutes.
