Abstract
This paper introduces and examines the four leading cell phone companies, their leaders, and the competition between them. The companies and leaders are as follows; Verizon wireless headed by Lowell C. McAdam; AT&T Mobility headed by Randall L. Stephenson; Sprint Nextel headed by Daniel Hesse; and T-Mobile USA headed by John Legere. Each of these companies has brought constant improvement to the cell phone market with new phones, competitive features that only one company offers, faster data and cell service, and more cell phone towers to increase their coverage. The competition between the companies is clearly seen by the amount of advertisement, popularity of the phones, and the extra features the phones offer. These companies are competing for the top spot all while trying to offer the most data, messaging and calling features all while offering the lowest possible price.
Top Four Leading Cell Phone Companies and Their Leaders The growth of the communications technology in general has created a huge demand for new and improved wireless access, applications, and wireless mobile. Currently, the United States is living in an era in which anywhere, anytime, and any media communication is the main concern of the people. According to the Cellular Telecommunication & Internet Association (CTIA) the four top wireless telecommunication services providers from top to bottom are Verizon wireless, AT&T Mobility, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA. Nowadays, the success of these 4 top wireless providers rely on a group of highly recognized leaders, who continuously research for substantial wireless improvements that meet all newly identified needs for wireless services. Verizon Wireless The first company and leader is the biggest cell phone provider in the country. Verizon Wireless headed by Daniel S. Mead is the leader in the cell phone industry with over 93 million cell phone customers and its annual revenue (last measured in 2011) at $110 billion. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Verizon Wireless is a joint endeavor of Verizon Communications and Vodafone. A leader in wireless voice and data services, Verizon owns and runs the United States’ largest 4G LTE network. The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network is accessible to nearly eighty percent of the population. Verizon also built the first wide-area wireless broadband network, delivered the first wireless 3G-multimedia service, and offers global voice and data services in more than 200 places around the world. In late 2009, Verizon Wireless began ads that made use of the iPhone as a center point and also released the Motorola Droid. In 2010, it launched its latest ad campaign with the tagline “Rule the Air” boasting Verizon’s superior ability to “send a strong signal.” They would not be able to make such bold advertisements without the help of Mead’s high-risk orientation. Daniel Mead’s leadership style follows along the transformational leadership qualifications. Verizon wireless could not become the highest rated and most popular wireless provider with someone who does not have a vision for the company. In this case, the transformational leader needs to be aware of the ever-changing technology in this field. Without that vision, a company that relies on high paced technology would get lost in this field. Nobody wants to buy outdated services. That’s why Verizon was the first company to introduce the 4G LTE network on December 5, 2010. With his top leadership abilities, Mead is going to be named the company’s next CEO. Mead’s ability to empower others comes from the high customer loyalty base. Mead strives for the best and expects nothing less from his company. That is why he has instilled such a positive attitude with his customers and employees. Verizon has given $66 million to nonprofit organizations, $3.8 billion in goods and services purchased from minority owned businesses, and matches donations made by Verizon
