One of the tricks to being successful in college is knowing what the instructor expects. This handout is designed to help you understand what we are looking for in the critical thinking/application paper so you have the best chance of success.

1. Due on April 15th. Turn it in on time. If you fail to turn it in you will fail this course.
2. Realize that 10% of the paper’s grade will be based on writing skills.
3. Do not think of this as a long flowing essay. It is divided into sections. Some sections are better suited for lists or charts, while others are better as paragraphs. You want to number each section.

Please feel free to take the following and fill the answers in so you do not have to worry about formatting the paper correctly. The section below is numbered for you.

I. Identification

Find at least five ethical issues in the case. Be sure to distinguish the central ethical issue from the others and give reasons why you believe that issue is the main problem.

IV. Application

1. Consequential Ethical Theory –

1a. Choose Act or Rule Utilitarianism and write one “good” paragraph (7-9 sentences) explaining the key components of the theory you chose. Make sure to include key terms, concepts, and ideas central to the theory.

1b. Using the theory you chose in part 1a apply the key terms, concepts and ideas to the case. You will need to come to a well-supported, clear decision based on the theory you chose above. This area should also be a minimum of 7-9 sentences.

2. Non-Consequential Ethical Theory –
