PERINEUM AND EPISIOTOMY I. Perineum A. Definition For women, the perineum is the area of skin that has a lot of nerve endings below the anus. This area extends to the vaginal opening, while for men it extends until the testicles. The perineum, when stimulated, provides sexual pleasure to both men and women. This is due to the abundancy of nerve endings located in this area.

B. Function The perineum serves as protection for the anus and genitals. It also separates the two. Other than these functions, it also helps support the bones in the pelvis and abdomen. Sexually, these are one of the more sensitive parts in the human body which is they play an active role in sexual actions.

II. Episiotomy A. Definition According to Merriam-Webster, an episiotomy is “a surgical incision of the perineum to enlarge the vaginal opening for obstetrical purposes during the birth process”. This basically means it is a cut to make the opening of the vagina larger for giving birth. Babies are bigger than the vaginal opening, so these cuts make it easier for the baby to come out.

B. Reasons Why People Do It According to americanpregnancy.org,
Perineum is not stretched that much yet
Baby is too large
Baby is in distress
Mother needs a vacuum assisted delivery
Baby is in a breech presentation; thus a complication
Mother can’t control her own pushing
