Georgia vs. South Ossetia
It all begun in 1992, conflict between Georgian government forces and ethnic Georgian militia on one side and the forces of South Ossetia and ethnic Ossetian militia who wanted South Ossetia to secede from Georgia and become an independent state, supported by individual Russian troops on the other. In early 1990, South Ossetia had only 300–400 poorly armed fighters. Within six months the South Ossetian force grew to 1,500 full-time fighters plus 3,500 volunteers. Georgia's forces were in much poorer shape. The ragtag Georgian forces composed of ethnic Georgians were not as well trained and equipped as their opponents. The Georgian National Guard that fought in the war was formed in January 1991, just before the fighting started. It was supposed to be a 12,000 strong force raised by conscription, but because of financial difficulties it had to be formed from volunteers instead. The war ended with a Russian-brokered ceasefire, signed on 24 June 1992, which created a united peacekeeping force and left South Ossetia divided between the rivaling authorities. However almost two decades later, a President of Georgia decided to change the history
On August 7, 2008, 4 hours before the attack on South Ossetia, President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili gives a speech to his people and Ossetia’s people. He claims to love Ossetian people and how much great respect he has for Ossetian culture and history. Saying that “we are all equal” (Saakashvili) and almost begs to take care of their country like together and protect it from violence. “Let us work together for better future” (Saakashvili) Unfortunately the President of Georgia has different future of South Ossetia on his mind. It wasn’t long till everything changed, 4 hours after the speech Georgia’s army and artillery started to rain down with bombs on peaceful South Ossetia, the first victim of this crime was Tckhinvali village. It was also the opening of the Olympic games in Beijing but it didn’t matter, even though there is an old tradition, the shall be no war or fighting during the Olympic games but Saakashvili wasn’t that kind of man to follow this tradition. The Georgian army started their military operation, they attacked South Ossetia’s people, which population is about 120000 people and this operation called “Clean Field”. During the interview of Head of the State Committee on Communication of South Ossetia, Irina Gagloyeva said “The want the land without us. They want this territory.” The porpose of this attack was to take control over the land of South Ossetia by force and total killing of civilians on this land. The Officer of the Public Prosecution of South Ossetia Andrei Orlov said “They wanted a one-day Blitzkrieg.”(Orlov) meaning enter South Ossetia through the Rocki Tunnel, kill everybody and tale their land, because without people on the land there will be no problems with taking it over. Unfortunately for Saakashvili his victory over civilian people didn’t last long. In the evening of August 8th the Russian army entered the same way through the Roki Tunnel and by August 10th Russian forces pushed Georgia’s military back to Gori in Georgia, and that’s when all the countries and politics started to noticed this event.
At that time the President of the United States of America George Bush informed on national TV “The United States of America stands with the democratically elected government of Georgia.”(Bush) and even U.S. presidential Candidate John McCain said during one of his campaign “Today, we are all Georgians.”(McCain) This is when everybody started to point fingers; Russia was the first country to be blame for this war, as always. McCain believes that they have to persuade Russian forces to withdraw from Georgia. And because of Russians got involved a lot of countries believed that it just made worst for everybody. But why people didn’t see that the victims of this were just civilians and farmers with women and children,
