Julius Caesar In Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar, Caesar met his bloody end at the hands of the conspirators in the first scene of act 3. Their plan successfully happened and achieved, however; Caesar’s “best-friend” Antony was enraged. The conspiracy saw Caesar as a tyrant whom wanted to take over the city, dictatorship. To overturn the conspiracy, Antony used his emotions and rhetorical devices to persuade the audience to withdraw the support against Brutus and the others speech they had given to gain the audiences’ support. His skilled abilities: planning and vengeful manipulator was shown during the speech. To gain the audience’s attention, Antony first started off saying his loyalties. In his speech, “I come not, friends, to steal away your hearts: I am no orator, as Brutus is. But as you know me all, a plain blunt man. That love my friend; and that they know full well. That they gave me public leave to speak for him.” He uses understatement to explain to the audience everything he says during the funeral, the speech, is not false really meant it. He wanted the audience to listen to everything he said which made the people switch sides. As Antony continued his speech, he also said, “I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke but here I am to speak what I do know.” His Hyperbole demonstrated how exaggerated he was when he saw Caesar lying on the ground, breathe less, cold, and letting blood. This, of course, had the audience feeling some type of way for Antony, somewhat like sympathy. Now, his last speech tells the audience that Caesar isn’t who you think he is, a dreadful man who wants to take over the city. This speech was personally said by Antony, “When the poor have cried, Caesar hart wept ambitious should be made of sternest self.” To restate, when Caesar saw the poor suffering, he helps them for his own sake. He’s a kind hearted man who doesn’t like to see his people in suffrage. This loyalty he gave to his people was tremendous and effective. Caesar stayed loyal to his people, but somehow his people don’t accept it and betrayed him. This allowed Antony the opportunity to convince the audience and the Conspiracy how it was dreadful to commit and to assassinate Caesar. Antony says “Show you sweet Caesar wounds, poor, poor, dumb mouths, and bid them to speak for me.” He gave that speech personification like the wounds can talk, because he was still and dead silence and he hoped Caesar was still alive somehow. Another speech impacted the conspiracy and the audience to side with him, “My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar and I mist pause til he come back to me.” This shows that Antony was very loyal to Caesar like a son or slave. He’s done everything as Caesar asked, and never obeys as he says everything Caesar wanted was command. His loyalties remained within him. Having a loyal friend is important to a friendship.
