“Why Johnny Can’t Preach”,by T. David Gordon

Johnny preaches bad sermons because he can neither think nor read; he can’t communicate. The main premise of this book is that an average person sitting in a church will generally hear a bad sermon. In order to present a good sermon, it is necessary for it to have a point which should be based on the text. People read the bible quickly and without any thought stimulation. However, the Bible must be read much more carefully. “How” the Bible says certain things is as important as to “what” it says. Individuals read the Bible in a superficial manner and often read it time after time without changing their opinions or developing a deeper understanding.
We’ve been shaped by today’s media in that we don’t differentiate between the important news and the trivial one. In addition, we are constantly multitasking and never focus on just one thing which is an absolute must when closely reading a text. This results in us focusing on “interesting” things rather than “significant” things. Thanks to technologies most people don’t compose their thoughts as carefully and frequently as people once did. We don’t compose text such as letters, journals, editorials or anything else. While the average telephone conversation may contain many more words than the average letter, letters will generally contain more significant
