Job Analysis
Job analysis is the method used to describe jobs and/or the human attributes necessary to perform it. There are three elements that make up a formal job analysis they are as follows: 1. the analyst specifies a procedure in advance and follows through with it. This procedure must be systematic. 2. The job is broken down into smaller units. This way the analyst is describing components of the jobs rather than the whole job. 3. The analysis results need to be in some written product. This can be electronic or on paper (Spector, 2012). There is not just one way to do a job analysis. There are many methods that provide different types of information about the jobs and also about the human attributes the person needs for that job. However job analysis fall under one of two categories. The first being job oriented approach. This type of approach provides the analyst with information about the nature of the tasks done on the job. The methods used can wither describe the tasks themselves or provide characteristics of the task (Spector, 2012). The second category is the person oriented approach. This type of approach provides a description of the characteristics needed for a person to successfully perform a particular job. Basically it’s the employee’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics necessary to handle the job. Knowledge is what the person should know to do a particular job. Skill is what the person is able to on the job. Ability is a person’s capability to do the job tasks or the possibility of learning to do tasks of the job. Other personal characteristics includes anything else relevant to the job and its tasks (Spector, 2012).
