Jieliang B & C
Most of the workers at precision are migrant ones including Jieliang. She calls her family back home when she can. Jieliang is among many young workers who aspire for greater opportunities beyond the assembly line. She herself was trying to learn English while working. Precision knows the demand for work in China; and being one of the most sought out employers they do not need to support their employee’s aspirations. It might sound vicious to say but the truth is Precision has the capability to fire workers for just about anything because they can fill their shoes immediately. The problem Precision has in its factories though is the TQC. The line workers like Jieliang are trained to not follow the TQC from the start. Jieliang describes the shortcut that her trainer taught her is what got her into trouble with the yellow hat to begin with. This revolt against the procedure has caused line workers to look for supervisors during work so they are not scolded for not following the TQC. Precision needs to work with the workers to create a better process that applies to what actually happen on the line.
I can see why Precision is in no rush to change the TQC or its ways. With employee turnover mostly being three years at most. Some changes that workers make to line now might not work for everyone. As an old saying goes “if something is not broken why fix it”. Precision right now is trying to boost production and some of the line worker’s shortcuts could work. I personally do not think it is worth investing the time into rewriting
