Interpretation Project
I believe that this story tells us that Jesus knows and likes our unknowingness of his return. It is part of his purpose for us, that He alone will know when he will come back, and we should always expect that his return will be soon. Christ lets us know that He will certainly do so, but makes it unknown of the time that it will occur. These verses are preparing us for Christ’s return, and that we should always be ready. He compares his return to a thief coming in the night, because no one knows when a situation like this will happen, but we prepare ourselves for things like this by locking our doors and securing our property. God wants us to prepare ourselves the same for His return. He wants us to be watchful of the infinite surprise.
The Gospel writer is trying to trying to portray how important Jesus is and his return will be. The writer is focusing solely on the end times, and how we need to concentrate on our relationship with God, and grow in his light. The stories before and after Matthew 24:42-44 all have the same common theme of Jesus’ second coming. They all share similarities of his judgement on the world, and the ones who have came to know Christ, and the ones who have not. In the beginning of Matthew 24, he gives the signs for us to look for of his returning. The end of Matthew 24 reiterates the uncertainty of the day of his return, but that
