THEME: This article focuses on the food scarcity and famine that the people of Western Sudan, Kordofan, and Darfur faced. The food crisis had an immense impact on the nomadic and sedentary population. Despite the crisis they faced, they still were able to find numerous ways to survive.
I. Introduction:
A. The drought caused the people living in Sudan to face a major crisis of food and water shortages for four years but they still were able to overcome this.
B. Sudan has experienced a noticeable decrease in the amounts of rainfall. This led most of the people of the northern and southern regions in poor economic conditions and brought major changes to their environment.
C. The decline in rainfall caused many people to migrate from northwestern to the southwestern areas in search for food and jobs.
D. The farmers and nomadic groups were in desperate search to find any areas where water was available. They traveled to the south because water sources were more available.
II. With Sudan being dependent on rain for livelihood, what disastrous effect did the drought have on the people living in Sudan?
A. People had to sell their possessions such as jewelry and household belongings, spend their savings, and forced to migrate to the south due to the decline in rainfall. The drought also caused a dramatic loss in livestock and less grain.
B. Even with farmers digging shallow wells to gain water, the drought still caused them to migrate. Migration was the only workable resolution to the drought situations.
C. Due to the drought, many men had to leave their families in search of jobs. Many of the men that left never returned back to their families.
D. The drought caused the people to only at once a day instead of three times. Some even ate every other day.
III. Why was sharing amongst each other during the drought still valued?
A. It is seen as a duty for an individual to share their resources with family and friends.
B. They still shared resources even though there was less to share. As long as they had food in their villages, they would share it with each other.
C. Being able to share with one another helped the them survive the dreadful drought.
IV. What did the nomadic and sedentary population do to survive the drought?
A. Families, neighbors, and friends shared food to make sure to help out the members that are suffering in their community. Sharing with one another helped control shortages of food.
B. As the drought continued to get worse, individuals migrated to southern regions where the drought was not as severe as in the north.
C. The population managed to deal with living under conditions of scarcity by adapting various strategies to survive the conditions the drought brought to the people.
D. The political leaders of the villages put every effort to help
