The Ideal Position in the field of Logistics Founded in 1963, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), a worldwide professional association of supply chain management professionals, defines logistics as the “part of supply chain management that plans, implements, and controls the efficient, effective forward and reverse flow and storage of goods, services and related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customers’ requirements” (“Journal of Business Logistics”). The term logistic manager originally referred to a military position. Military managers were in charge of making sure far-flung military groups had food and supplies, in order to keep up morale and fighting effectiveness. The term migrated into the private sector as long-distance transportation of goods became easier and more cost effective (“What is a Logistics Manager”). Majority of my previous work experience and both of my current jobs, as an Automated Logistical Specialist in the United States Army and a paralegal for a large firm are within this field. Due to the change in transporting and how business is now conducted, companies now hire third-party logistics (3PL) providers to execute logistical activities that have traditionally been performed within an organization itself.
