Colonial resistance began between 1763 and 1776 and by this time they were becoming more and more resistant towards British rule. British policies toward the
American colonies over the years caused a growing tension between the two, until finally America decided to resist and reject the imperial policies. The policies of Britain threatened the colonists republican values, along with the unfair and harsh policies regarding taxation and restrictions. This eventually provoked the colonies to revolt and to establish their own values, causing the split from England.
By 1763 the British started to enforce unfair policies and many of those policies regarded the taxation of goods. The French and Indian War had just ended and the
British needed a source of income to pay off their wars debts. The first act to anger the colonists was the Sugar Act of 1764, which was a tax on sugar. However the act did not effectively end the smuggling caused by the earlier Molasses Act. The Sugar Act also led parliament to pass a tax on paper goods, called the Stamp Act of 1765. The act infuriated the colonist and sparked a fierce resistance against the British. Therefore the
Sons of Liberty was formed, a rebel group determined on stopping taxation, they made examples of many British tax collectors. However more taxes were established, the
Declaratory Act 1766 was passed allowing parliament to tax the colonies in any way they wanted. Such as the Tea Act of 1773 which led to a massive rebellion. Overall
Britain's unfair policies led to an increase in bitterness the colonies had against
England.
Beginning in 1763 Britain also set restrictions on colonial life. The Pontiacs
Rebellion was a war launched in 1763, it was a group of Native Americans that were unsatisfied with British Policies after the Seven Years War so they formed an uprising in hopes of driving the British from expanding westward and resulted in the Proclamation of 1763, which forbade Americans from settling or buying land west of the
Appalachians. However this did not stop the colonist from traveling. The Quartering Act of 1765 was also initiated. Parliament enacted it to order local governments of the
American colonies to provide the British soldiers with any needed accommodations or housing. This act further angered the colonist even more, as they were forced to quarter
British troops in their homes against their will, but this did however help push the colonies toward revolution. Also, in the later to be drafted Bill of Rights, the third amendment will state that you do not have to quarter troops in your house. To make matters even worse the Intolerable Acts of 1774 was passed. It was the combination of
Coercive Acts, meant to punish the colonists after the 1773 Boston Tea Party by closing the Boston ports and reducing the power of self government in the colony. The
Intolerable Acts were seen by American colonists as a blueprint for a British Plan to
