The book is about Katniss, a sixteen year old girl, who lives in district 12 with her mother and her sister, Prim. Each year, the Hunger Games are held, and a boy and a girl from each district are chosen to fight to the death. Prim is chosen but Katniss volunteers to take the place of her in the game. Peeta is chosen as the boy from District 12. The majority of the book takes place in the Arena designed by the Gamemakers. Katniss and Peeta win but their friendship declines when Peeta discovers that Katniss’ love for him was all a facade in an attempt to survive. The Capitol also watches Katniss very closely because they are afraid that she will rebel.

An extremely significant quote from the novel is when Katniss vows to do something to show the Capitol that no matter what they do, they do not have full control of the tributes (236-237). This is significant because it foreshadows what Katniss will do later on in the story. Another important quote is when Peeta talks about how Katniss does not know how big of an impact she makes (91). This shows how important Katniss is to Peeta. It is apparent that Katniss has greatly changed his life, and it also foreshadows how big of an impact she will make on his life in the future.

I extremely liked this book because it was very unpredictable. Predictable books are all so cliché but The Hunger Games seemed to always take me by surprise.
