How the River Came to Be

Once there was this family of turtles, Rag, Izzy, Victor, Erin, and Reed, who lived in a village miles away from the water source, the ocean. All the other animals in the village would travel to the ocean to bathe, swim, or bring back fresh water to the village. The turtles would have loved to go back and forth to the ocean, but there were simply too many of them to be able to make the trip and be back home by nightfall. One day Rag suggested that they ask the two hares in the village to go fetch them some fresh water from the ocean. The hares were the fastest animals in the village, and could have made the trip swiftly; however, when the turtles asked them, the hares were deliberately malicious and refused to go get the water.
Izzy proposed that they asked the elephants to go to the ocean and fetch the water since they were the strongest animals in the village. When the turtles asked the elephants, they complained about how hot the sun was, and refused to go get the water. Erin, Victor, and Reed presented the idea that the whole family should dig a long narrow strip from their home to the ocean. Several months went by before the strip was complete. After all the digging was done water flowed from the ocean down the strip to the home of the turtles, and they swam, bathe, and had fresh water to last them a lifetime.
