What is the mix of land use in the 3 study areas?
Needed to find out what each building was used for in each of the study area’s and to see if it differed to the other area’s so we collected it to compare all 3 of them to compare to see the difference. We would not expect that all areas would be similar for example we would expect that 027D which was the Barbican would be a lot cleaner and have more house’s rather than rows of terraces then 027B which was more of a university area with a lot of University facilities but also a lot of terrace houses with small corner shops.
We walked around each of the study area’s A, B, D with a base map and we marked on it things such as what it was for example if it was a University reception or if it was a pub , a shop etc.
We tried to access everywhere in the study maps so we could fill it all in so that we could get a wide range of data. Which we did complete all the areas that were accessible for us to get to in each of the 3 study areas.
Some of the problems we encountered for this is what each of the building was used for example we found a building where it was unused but it was a optician’s in progress being built. Another problem was that when it came to see if it was normal housing or converted housing.
If we were to do this land use again we would only examine the bottom floor so we could get a more accurate conclusion and it would minimize confusion. Another thing we would have changed is that we would of do some background research so we could make more clear judgments to do with the specific type of land use.
What is the mix of housing types in 3 study areas?
We needed to walk around with a base map and distinguish if it was a house , a flat , terrace , detached house , apartment and we needed to do it for all 3 study area’s we also needed to mark it on the base map. We expected to see difference in the housing qualities in all 3 of the study area’s as we expected in D for it to be more of a tourism attraction it is a lot cleaner whereas in A and B there is a lot of litter and not taken care as much as not many people apart from people who live there go down to that area.
We used the base map to collect our data only we wrote on each building on our base map with what each of them was for example we would put on house if it was a house and we did this for each building on the base map and for all 3 of the study areas.
We walked around all of the areas of the base map not picking out a few but doing all of them the building’s that were there apart from one’s we could not access.
A problem was that to distinguish if it was a house from a flat or if it was a University hall from an apartment. Another problem was getting down the back alleys to distinguish buildings down there as it was a lot harder to access those areas.
We could have improved this by marking on the base map on each of the building slots the quality of each of the houses for example if it was in good condition or not if it had broken glass or if it had peeling paint. We would have done this for all 3 study areas.
What is the mix of services in 3 study areas?
We needed to once again walk around the different streets on the base map and mark on what service it was for example public toilets or a garage etc. However this time we used a tally to mark our results down on. We would have expected for there to be not many services in both A and B as it’s not a very popular place and we wouldn’t expect to see things such as a public toilet. Which is what happened however in 027D we would expect to see a lot more services for example garages, a lot of shops, public toilets, Hotel accommodation etc. This is what we did see.
We used our tally chart to collect our data where we had a lot of different services on there for example garages we also had a survey in which we asked the local people
