Between July 22 and September 12, 1942, the German authorities deported and or murdered around 300,000 Jews in the Warsaw ghetto. Some Jews managed to run away from concentration camps in an attempt to escape from the Nazis; however, in the end there were many casualties. This essay will explore and answer the following questions: Why did some Jews in the Warsaw ghetto’s rebel against the Nazi’s? And were their Jews that didn't rebel against the nazi's because of their involuntary acceptance of the societal norms that discriminated them? In order to understand why or why not the Jews rebelled, background information of the Warsaw ghetto will be explored.
Life in the ghetto wasn’t the best lifestyle you could live in. During the Holocaust, a ghetto was far away from other places in the city which Jews were forced to live. There were a lot ghettos throughout Europe during the Holocaust period. However, the largest was the Warsaw Ghetto in Poland, with about 400,000 people crammed into a area of about 2.5 square miles. Half of the time, Jews won’t make to the camp because the trip was so longer that Jews would die there. When the nazis would put the jews on the trains they would try to fight the nazis so the jews won’t go on the train. “Warsaw Ghetto had thousands of prisoners, all of them were Jewish, in 1943. Jews were meant to be sent to the death camps in Auschwitz, but began to rebel against their German soldiers. They were outgunned and outnumbered by the amount of soldiers.” (“Many Jews”) Most of the Jewish fighters were hungry and weak, many of them were sick too. So the fighting for the soldiers was not so easy for them. Some knew that fighting back would get them killed, but they fought anyway because they had enough with the nazis and wanted the others to live their life. The biggest problem for the Jewish underground was that they did not get support from other groups like nationalist groups. Other ethnic groups would not assist them because they knew that they would get in trouble or killed for helping a Jew out. Police units deported 265,000 Jews to the Treblinka killing center and 11,580 to forced labor camps. Either way if you tried to help, the police would do there best to find a Jew and make sure their dead. The police said that the Nazis were going to eliminate the ghetto entirely. So just kill all the Jews right when they got to the ghetto. Over 1,000 Jewish fighters, including children, used pistols against the Nazi weapons. For weeks, they successfully attacked the Germans.
