This module allows you the opportunity to work with a group of people to manage and develop a hospitality organisation. This is a business simulation exercise which enables you to take business decisions in the context of the current operating environment and to evidence your understanding of both operational and strategic issues and their impact on your business plan.
Our vision is to develop future trans-national hospitality business leaders and this module will allow you to enhance your commercial awareness including financial acumen, develop leadership skills and emotional intelligence as well as your ability to be creative and problem solve.
Why is this subject important?
This module enables you to develop the all important holistic approach that is required when managing a hospitality business. It will bring together your learning from level 4 and level 5 in conjunction with your experiences in industry and ask you to make and review business decisions. You will be provided with detailed information about the background and operating parameters of a hospitality business as well as being asked to research additional management information. You will work as a management team and undertake a range of activities including market research, developing a business plan, taking duty management decisions, presenting your monthly financial position, preparing management reports and developing a strategic direction for your business at the end of the module. You will use the 'Business Model Canvas' developed by Osterwalder and Pigneur (2010) to help frame, shape and defend your business approach.

You will work as a management team and undertake a range of activities including market research, developing a business plan, taking duty management decisions, presenting your monthly financial position, preparing management reports and developing a strategic direction for your business at the end of the module. In effect you will undertake the role of a manager with responsibilities for day to day operations as well as making decisions that will influence the strategic direction of the business. You will develop an understanding of the challenges of managing in a complex trans-national environment.
In your workshops and presentations you will be working as a professional management team and developing the employability skills mentioned above, all of which are so necessary to becoming a successful hospitality manager.
What is the current research context that this module applies?
The module will draw on current research to explore the current structure of the hospitality industry together with future trends to support the delivery of professional practice in hospitality operations. Recent research published by the British Hospitality Association, Trends and Developments 2013 together with Hospitality 2015, Game Changers or Spectators from Deloitte (2010) and market data from Key Note, Passport and Mintel Oxygen will all be used to support student learning. Insights from Industry speakers, invited as part of our 'Hospitality Inspires' lecture series, will be used to create an overview as to how the global hospitality industry is performing together with indications of future performance.
