Tennis Court Oath- The Tennis Court Oath was a pivotal event during the first days of the French Revolution. The Oath was a pledge signed by 576 of the 577 members from the Third Estate who were locked out of a meeting of the Estates-General on 20 June 1789.

Bastille- A fortress.

It retained the monarchy, but sovereignty effectively resided in the Legislative Assembly, which was elected by a system of indirect voting. faction- A small, organized, dissenting group within a larger one
Republic- A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president.
