History of roman baths
Introduction:
Roman Baths was built upon hot spring as a main bathing and socializing complex in the city center. In this poster I will tell about history of Roman Baths, and I divided it to three different periods:
1)pre-Roman occupation;
2)during the Roman occupation;
3)nowadays.
1)Before Roman occupation:
The history of Bath has begun before the Roman occupation. According to the legend, city was found by prince Bladud, one of the sons of Celtic King Lud. First building was built around spring in 836 BC by Celts. It was a temple to the Celtic goddess Sulis, whom the Romans identified with Minerva.
2)During the Roman occupation:
After the Romans invasion, the name Sulis continued to be used, and city was named “Aquae Sulis” (the waters of Sulis). Romans built a first temple in 70 AD and bathing complex constructed in the following 300 years. During the Roman occupation, and on the instructions of Emperor Claudius, engineers used oak piles to provide a stable foundation into the mud and surrounded the spring with an irregular stone chamber lined with lead. In the 2nd century, it was enclosed within a wooden barrel-vaulted building, and included the caldarium (hot bath), tepidarium (warm bath), and frigidarium (cold bath). After the Romans retreat the baths were destroyed by natural diseases. Later, this bath complex was redeveloped by English architects and opened for visitors in 1897.
3)Nowadays:
