Response 3 Bob Herbert was a New York Times op-ed columnist from 1993 until 2011, he focuses on race issues, poverty in America and so on. He discusses American dream in this article, “Hiding from Reality.”Herbert claims, “ there is not much of [American dream] that’s left anymore.” He presents some facts that support his opinions. The first is employment issues. In this article he shows some numbers of foreign-born workers gained jobs but native-born workers lost. When he consider that fact, he provides a solution suggesting that U.S.needs to enhance the economy with full employment. Furthermore, people who want to work will get a job and by hardworking they will make a better life. He says “right now, nothing close to that is happening.” He thinks a misguided crash program will make people suffering in the long term. For example, in New York City, Mayor Michael chooses Ms. Black to run the public school system with the in tension to cut its budget. Ms. Black doesn’t have a background in education. This act will only hurt the schools. At the end, Herbert says“ until we recognize how much trouble we’re really in...[and]only then will we be able to begin resuscitating the dream.” I disagree with Herbert’s idea that “ there is not much of [American dream] that’s left anymore.” There is a well-known definition about American dream, which is that people who start poor but with hardworking will achieve success. I still believe that people will be really better off with more effort. For me the American dream is first to acquire some higher education. It is the same thing with jobs whereby hardworking leads to success. When I was in high school, lots of my friends planed to attend university in America. That is the American dream for our group.
