Some texts are more likely to generate complex thoughts and writings than other texts. One of the reasons why text generates complex thoughts and writings is because not everyone has the same interests. According to Graff’s article “Hidden Intellectualism” it focuses on how many students if given the chance would be able to enhance their abilities to learn by choosing subjects that interests them. It has been known that many students have problems with channeling their street smarts “into good academic work” (244). Graff’s theory of incorporating students’ interest into academic writing is extremely useful because it sheds light on the difficult problem of trying to have more teachers encourage their students to use subjects they are interested in to be able to produce good academic work. Another reason that proves that some texts can be more complex than others is because there might be a high percentage that most of the time students might not be as knowledgeable on certain subjects as others. Instead of letting students associate their street smarts to identify with intellectualism schools and colleges choose to overlook those students. It has become common today to dismiss the hidden intellectualism that can be found in our everyday society. I agree because most students including myself can find some college texts hard to understand whereas to letting them choose what they are interested for example magazines we can find ourselves surprised at what we can accomplish just by putting it into academic use. These are some of the things that prove that street smarts can also be considered hidden
developed my interest in Psycholinguistics and Cognitive Science. As a PhD student in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, majoring in language processes and minoring in pedagogy, I wish to continue my desire in merging the gap between research and instructional practice. After taking two classes with Dr. Bever, and three with Dr. Nicol in psycholinguistics, bilingualism and writing systems, I have turned my interest into more specific and technical issues relating language processing in bilinguals’…
Memorandum POL 303 The American Constitution Prof. March 04, 2013 Memorandum I am writing to propose a solution to a problem of how the Establishment Clause forbids the teaching of the theory of intelligent Design in public schools. The problem is there are not enough textbooks and the ones that are on hand are outdated. In hope that you will approve my proposal and get the funding to order up to date text books and enough in order to teach intelligent Design in public schools in the next…

give enough detail for 2 of my weaknesses - if I can figure out how I will add the resubmission for which I got good feedback) Observation I have learned from observing my peers and experienced teachers how important it is to use a variety of teaching methods and styles. Within the same lesson I have witnessed teachers organising their students so that they worked alone, in pairs, in pods, and in teams. The students were encouraged to move around the classroom, doing exercises pinned to the…
Beliefs about teaching and learning I believe that teaching and learning is an individual unique experience for both students and educators. For students to benefit the most in their learning environment, teachers need to understand different learning techniques and styles. Some educators consider what they do a 40 hour a week job however for their goals and context to come across to their students they must consider what they do a lifestyle. If teachers are to be entrusted with the education of…
Reflective Practice in the context of teaching ESOL Reflective practice engages practitioners in a continuous cycle of self-observation and self-evaluation in order to understand their own actions and the reactions they prompt in themselves and in learners (Brookfield, 1995; Thiel, 1999). Reflective practice is considered as an evolving concept which views learning as “an active process of reviewing an experience of practice in order to describe, analyse, evaluate and so inform learning about…
preferences. Instruction is targeted to the needs of each group with the aim of moving all students toward high levels of achievement ("A look at," 2009). The lesson plan selected for the differentiated learning assignment is lesson five of a letter writing class for an adult GED classroom. The lesson teaches the differences between advocacy and lobbying. The primary focus of the lesson is to teach the student to write a thank you letter to a member of congress. The students are to thank the congressman…
to Philips (1996), the presence of a good mentor is crucial to the student’s well being and learning potential. Nursing has grown so complex that standardisation and routines are no longer possible and can be seen as poor practice (CQC 2010). The complexity and responsibility in nursing practice now requires ongoing development in our career. This means an understanding of the differences between experienced nurse and novice is important. Patricia Benner’s (1982) Novice to Expert discussed the different…

CASE STUDY 3: “Getting EFL students to speak: an action research approach” 1. INTRODUCTION Speaking is one of the major and problematic issues in English teaching and learning. Some learners feel afraid of talking and they face some difficulties in reaching an appropriate fluency level. They have a negative view about it, and they reflect this in class. It is necessary to analyse learning factors such as age, personality, cognitive style, learning style, curriculum, outcomes, etc. to understand…
