Assignment 1: Hershey’s Sweet Mission Hershey Chocolate Company is the largest chocolate supplier in North America. Since 1894 its rich history, Hershey has created various products that has provided the company the ability to meet and exceed the desires and needs of stakeholders-consumers, employees and business partners. Hershey’s mission statement has been quite simple and straight forward, “Bringing sweet moments of Hershey happiness to the world every day.”(Noe/Hollenbeck/Gerhart/Wright) This paper will discuss the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system to appeal to the diverse groups, analyze how you would interpret the values that Hershey embraces, the trends that may impact Hershey the most, and what the effects that mentoring could have on integrating values into the Hershey culture.
The redesign of Hershey’s performance management system Hershey’s four identified values demonstrate that the organization has a plan of action in place in order to meet and exceed the expectations of the employees. It is imperative for any organization, but more importantly those that are large corporations to have a standard guideline of what employees should expect. Hershey’s new redesign plan is set to appeal towards the younger generation. Although this appears like a great idea, how does this assist in appealing to the more tenured crowd? I would recommend Hershey to take a survey or suggestion from all employees on how they would like to see their performance management tracked. The performance management tool should be able to direct financial gain, motivate the workforce, and improve management control. The goals that have been established should be attainable for all employees and if not, a method should be in place in order to list what other employees’ best demonstrated practices were. No company wants to see any of its employees fail; however, the company must have standards in place to ensure all goals are being met in order for the company to be successful.
Analyze how to interpret the values that Hershey embraces As an employee of Hershey I would take pride in what the company and its core values. If you do not believe in the company and its products and services, then it becomes impossible to convince others to believe in the company and what it has to offer. The first value of being Open to Possibilities means to embrace all change that may occur. As time moves on and the world continues to evolve, change is often suggested or required. Change is needed to continue the success the company has in mind. The second value of Growing Together, means that each employee would need to be willing to assist his/her peers to meeting and exceeding the expectations of the stakeholders. The third value of Making a Difference requires employees to lead by example and set the bar high which will speak volumes for those to follow and understand where the company is headed. The fourth and key core value of One Hershey means that everyone must work together as one cohesive unit. No employee should be left behind. Each employee will be held to a certain level of expectation that must be met. If only a few employees are on the same page it will only create a difficult work environment.
Trends that will impact Hershey Trends can be good and bad, but it is up to the organization of which one the company will follow. Trends that may impact Hershey are the following: aging workforce, diverse workforce, and skill
