Introduction
Welcome to the BTEC National Diploma (BND) at Richmond Upon Thames college. You have two years of hard work ahead of you which you will find both challenging and demanding. The course team aims to make it as interesting and enjoyable as possible and they will do everything they can to help you achieve your potential. However the only person who can ensure your success is YOU. We hope that you will respond to the challenge.
The purpose of this handbook is to provide you with some essential course information.
What will I study and learn?
The BTEC National Diploma is a two year full time programme which is desaigned to provide you with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to prepare you for university or employment in the IT industry.

How is the course assessed?
All BTEC courses are based on coursework, there are no exams. You will complete a number of assignments. Each one is part of the overall qualification and you will be required to complete all of them to pass the course.
Each unit within the qualification has specified assessment and grading criteria which are to be used for grading purposes. A summative unit grade can be awarded at pass, merit or distinction: * to achieve a ‘pass’ a learner must have satisfied all the pass criteria * to achieve a ‘merit’ a learner must additionally have satisfied all the merit grading criteria * to achieve a ‘distinction’ a learner must additionally have satisfied all the distinction grading criteria.
The final grade calculated at the end of the course is done by using the formal criteria provided by Edexcel and shown below.
Pass = 70 points
Merit = 80 points
Distinction = 90 points

What is the difference between the Subsidiary Diploma (24 weeks) and the Extended Diploma?
In year 1 you will study 6 units until March. 2 sessions per week for each (12 sessions)
Students who have passed all 6 units will continue onto the Diploma. You will then study 3 more units until the end of June. (4 sessions per week in each)
If you do not pass all 6 units by March, you will not be able to continue onto the Extended diploma.
In year 2 you will continue on the Extended diploma and study 9 more units.
Final grade for those who pass all18 nunits goes from PPP (120 UCAS points) to D*D*D* (420 UCAS points)
