Scenario: Group Assignment: Meal planning for an airline
You work for an airline, Indian Ocean Air, and need to plan a main meal for flights between Mumbai and London, which have 400 passengers and 20 staff on board. Most flights are full. Meals have to be ordered at least 6 hours before take-off, when you know all you staff and passenger’s nationalities and genders. Your caterer has a choice of Lamb, Chicken, Fish or Vegetarian dishes. Some customers and staff will accept a second choice, but most people want their own choice. It is vital to please as many customers and staff as possible, buy you only have space to store 440 meals in the plane's kitchen for the 420 people on board.
Experience shows that knowing a passengers nationalities and gender helps meal planning: it seems that fewer people from the Indian sub-continent eat lamb than people from Europe, possibly because many 'Indians' are vegetarians and do not eat any form of meat. However men from Europe do intend to like meat. A lot of women and men from all countries like chicken. Also while a minority of fish-eaters from all countries really like fish, many people will not eat fish at all. The essential problem is how many meals of each type to order to make a total for 440 meals and keep as many customers satisfied, given that you know passengers nationalities and genders only 6 hours before the flight.
Your manager wants to use planning rules that sat that for every 100 European males you should order a% Lamb, B% Chicken, C% Fish and D% Vegetarian. For every 100 'Indian' males order E% Lamb, F% Chicken, G% Fish H% Vegetarian etc.. And the same idea for all European and Indian women, though with different ratios. But what should A-P be? She suggests you conduct surveys to find out the correlation between the nationalities, gender and meal preference and present this to her and other senior managers.
NB Although we want to know peoples nationality - and would know this about our passengers, from their passports - given that this flight is between Mumbai and London, we are really interested in passengers home 'cultures'. So on this flight we can divide all nationalities into three board groups or cultures: ''Europeans'', ''Indian sub-continent'' and ''others''. For ''European'' you may take anyone of European, Russian, and Australian or New Zealand nationality. And all American nationalities, including Canadians and all Latin American countries which for ''Indian'' you may accept anyone of Bangladesh, Bhutani, Indian, Nepal, Pakistani or Sri Lankan nationality. All other nationalities should be counted as ''other'' (e.g. Chinese, other Asian, African, etc.)
