HAITI

During the 17th century; the native Taino Amerindians inhabited the island of Hispaniola COLUMBUS discovered it in 1492 virtually annihilated by the Spanish settlers with in the 25 years. The French established a presence on Hispaniola. In 1697, it later became Haiti because of the Spain ceded in the French to the western third of the island. Based on forestry and sugar- related industries belong to the French Colony, they became one of the wealthiest with in the Caribbean because of the heavy importation of African slaves and considerable environmental degradation. During the late 18th century, there is nearly half million slaves revolted under the Toussaint L’OUVERTURE. In 1804 Haiti became the first black republic to declare independence after a prolong struggle. Through out the Western Hemisphere which was known as the poorest country, through out history Haiti has been plagued by political violence. After the armed rebellion led the forced resignation and exile of President Jean-Bertrand ARISTIDE in February 2004, the interim government took office to organize new elections under the auspices of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). May 2006 Haiti finally did inaugurate a democratically elected president and parliament due to the continued violence and the technical delays prompted repeated the postponements.
Haiti is a Caribbean, one third western of the Hispaniola Island, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, west of the Dominican Republic.
