Possible Title for Paper: Gender Roles

Thesis: Even though many people believe times have changed, the gender roles have not changed much because today’s society still looks down more on women then men and both are not treated equally.

Premise 1: Traditional roles were clear-cut and defined. * Women stayed home to care for children and do housework while men left to work. * This system of society was not too far off the hunter gatherer concept where women cared for the house and the men hunted. * Morals for the two were also different. Men obviously had the upper hand with women being the traditional passive.
Premise 2: Adultery * It was acceptable for a man to commit adultery, however a woman was to remain chaste. * It seemed that men were allowed to be philanderers while their wives stayed at home.
Premise 3: Atalanta * Atalanta a character from the text Mythology, was a beautiful maiden who was the daughter of the king. When her father saw that he had been given a girl instead of a boy he was very bitter and disappointed, she was then left on a mountain side. From this, we can assume that men did not feel girls were worthy of being raised and taken care of in place of having boys. * Ghe was taken care of by a she-bear, and she grew up to be a very fast, daring girl.
